Meet Shan, Nurse and Entrepreneur
Hi, I’m Agnes Wangari Thyaka, but everyone calls me Shan or Shanny. My days are split between working as a nurse and running my own BnB. Caring for others comes naturally to me, and I pour this energy into both my patients and my guests.
How My Journey Began
Becoming a nurse was a heartfelt decision. Losing my grandfather to cancer pushed me to choose a career that allows me to help and comfort others. A few months ago, my good friend Esther Muthoni introduced me to the world of BnB hosting, and I haven’t looked back. Sharing hospitality has added adventure to my life, and I now even run an Instagram page, @shanny.homes, where I share glimpses of my hosting journey.
Facing Real-World Challenges
Nursing isn’t always easy. Finding a job can sometimes feel like chasing a moving target, even though the need for nurses is clear. I keep putting my name out there and trust that the right opportunity will open up. In both nursing and running a BnB, there are long hours and emotional ups and downs, but having a good support system and remembering to take care of myself keeps me going. The BnB world has its challenges too, with some months busier than others, but staying flexible and planning ahead keeps things running smoothly.

Making Space for Life
Balancing work and personal life takes effort. Setting clear boundaries is a must, so I make sure to take breaks and rest, just as seriously as I commit to work. Even a quick walk or some gentle stretching helps me recharge. Having time for prayer or a quiet moment keeps me centered, and I always plan my week so there’s room for friends, family, and hobbies. Listening to my mind and body makes it easier to know when it’s time to pause and rest.
What Beauty Means to Me
Beauty, in my eyes, is about more than just how you look. Taking care of myself on the outside does matter to me, but true beauty is also about kindness, grace, and how you make those around you feel. I believe real beauty grows as you focus on personal growth, healthy habits, and meaningful connections.
Tips for Young Women
Be yourself, and don’t rush to fit anyone else’s expectations. There’s something powerful in moving through life at your own speed and being honest about who you are. Confidence comes from trusting your journey, not comparing it to someone else’s. Surround yourself with positive people and stay curious about learning new things. Every step, whether forward or backward, shapes you. Value it all, and remember that the right opportunities will come along if you stay true to yourself.

My Hopes for the Future
Looking ahead, I want my BnB to reach more people and maybe one day welcome guests from around the world. Nursing is close to my heart, and I hope I can someday open clinics that help those who need it most. For now, I’m taking each day as it comes, learning along the way, and trusting that great things are possible.
My Honest Skincare Routine
The best skincare advice I can offer is to be steady and consistent. I stick with La Roche because it works well for my skin, and I make sure never to skip my morning and night routine. Gentle cleansing, regular moisturizing, drinking plenty of water, and sunscreen are my go-tos. When my skin feels healthy, I feel ready to take on anything the day brings.
